Toilet Grab Rails

It is common for Grab Rails to be installed in order to assist elderly or disabled individuals with transfer on and off the toilet.

There are many different varieties of toilet Grab Rails, so it is important to consider:

• Where the rail will be installed.
• The intended purpose of the rail.
• The specific needs of the user/users.
• The relevant standards, legislation and compliance issues.

Grab Rail Australian Standards

The Australian Standard 1428.1-2021 Design for Access and Mobility provides guidelines for the suggested placement and specification of Grab Rails.

While the Building Code of Australia outlines regulations for public buildings, the application of Australian Standards is not mandatory in a private dwelling. However, these Standards have been adopted as the accepted best practice for home modifications in a private/residential property.

Australian Standards set out minimum technical specifications which may not not be suitable for all situations and customisation may be required. To create an appropriate long-term solution, it would be best to consult with an Occupational Therapist.
